Chico’s Builder’s Village nears completion

CHICO, Calif. – Builders Village in Chico is making significant strides in its development, focusing on housing for people with disabilities. The homes are now framed, and the underground work at the construction site is complete.

Action News Now visited the site on Thursday to see the progress that has been made on the project since the groundbreaking in May of 2025.

The site, once bare, is now home to 61 units taking shape, including mostly studios and some larger apartments. All are designed with accessibility in mind.

“This project specifically is focused on people with disabilities. If you’re on SSI, for example, you’re making about $1,200. Being able to find affordable housing is a barrier,” said Lizzy Young, executive director of Chico Housing Action Team (CHAT).

A $16.5 million grant from the state’s Community Care Expansion Program has helped bring the project to life. The conversation that began more than 10 years ago in Chico’s Safe Space Shelter has turned into a tangible reality.
